What changed in 2026: the 2-ounce limit
In April 2026, Massachusetts enacted H.5350, An Act Modernizing the Commonwealth's Cannabis Laws, which raised the adult possession and purchase limit from one ounce to two ounces. The bill passed the Massachusetts House unanimously, 155 to 0, on April 2, 2026, according to Marijuana Moment, and the increase is now reflected in the Cannabis Control Commission's official rules.
So in plain terms: an adult 21 or older can now carry up to two ounces of cannabis flower in public, double the old one-ounce cap. The law directs the Cannabis Control Commission, the state agency, usually called the CCC, that regulates legal cannabis, to set the equivalent limits for concentrates and edibles. ("Concentrates" are products like vape oil or dabs; "edibles" are THC-infused foods and drinks.) Check the CCC's current guidance for those exact equivalents, since they're set by regulation.
What did NOT change
The 2026 law was mostly about purchase limits and how the industry is regulated. The everyday rules below stayed the same, and they're the ones most people trip over.

You must be 21 or older to buy, grow, or possess adult-use cannabis in Massachusetts, and you'll need a valid government-issued photo ID every time you buy, per the Cannabis Control Commission. "Adult-use" just means recreational, as opposed to the separate medical-marijuana program.
At home, you can keep more
You may possess up to 10 ounces of cannabis in your primary home, according to the CCC. Anything above the amount you're allowed to carry in public should be kept in a locked container or locked location.
You can grow your own, within limits
Adults can grow up to six cannabis plants per person, and up to 12 plants in a household with two or more adults, the CCC's home-cultivation rules state. The plants can't be visible from a public place without binoculars or similar aids, and they have to be in a space with locks or other security. Growing more than the limit carries a civil penalty.
No using it in public
You cannot consume cannabis in any form, smoking, vaping, or eating, in public places or on federal land, the CCC states. Massachusetts treats public consumption as a civil offense; Mass.gov describes a civil penalty (up to $100) for using it in a public place. A "public place" is broad, parks, sidewalks, and parking areas can count.
Treat your car like it has open-container rules
Just like alcohol, you can't have an open container of cannabis in the passenger area of a vehicle. Doing so can bring a civil penalty of up to $500, per the CCC; keep it in the trunk or a locked glove compartment. And driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, full stop.
It stays in Massachusetts
